FileZilla SFTP Tutorial
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) with
FileZilla

Step 1) Acquiring an SFTP client
Download it here (We are using version 2.2.17) FileZilla is covered under the GNU GPL so it is free to redistribute. When prompted save the program to your hard disk wherever you please (just remember where you put it!)

N.B If you're running an older version you can easily upgrade by downloading the latest one (above) and reinstalling.

Step 2) Installing the client
a) Browse to the directory that you downloaded the file to.
b) Run the executable (.exe), it is virus free.
c) Select your language and agree to the GNU GPL.
d) You then have a number of options concerning what to install. Just click next and choose where you want to install it, the default should be fine for most users.
e) If you want to you can create shortcuts in your start menu, otherwise check the "Do not create shortcuts" option at the bottom.
f) Under the "General Settings" leaving it on "Do not use secure mode" will probably be fine for most users" Again the second option can probably be left for everyone but people who have two or more people in the same house, using the same computer that have different hosting accounts with us!
g) Click Install.

Step 3) Configuring the client
Stage 1
a) Open the program, it will be in your start menu, your desktop, quick launch or in the installation folder.
b) Click on "Edit".
c) Click on "Settings".
d) Under the Connection tree click on "SFTP Settings".
e) Leave "Use Compression" as "Default".
e) Choose to "Use SSH2" (a more secure SSH connection).
f) You may have to configure your firewall and proxies.
g) Click OK.

Stage 2
a) Click on File (top left)
b) Click on Site Manager.
c) Click on New Site.
d) Insert your domain name as the host (see image)
e) Enter 722 as the port number.
f) Select "SFTP using SSH2" from the "Servertype" drop-down menu.
g) Select " Normal " under "Logontype".
h) Enter your cPanel username and password.
i) Select whether you want to save your password or not.
j) Click on "Save and Exit".

FileZilla Settings

Thank You
You should now be happy in the knowledge that you are communicating with the server securely! I will of course be offering support to anyone that needs it. If you are having problems with any aspect of SFTP or any problems in general then feel please open a support ticket via your user area and we will be glad to assist.

Optional performance tweaks
1) Quicker uploads
If you are a broadband user then you can tweak FileZilla to upload multiple files at once so the whole process takes less time.
1a) Go to Edit --> Settings
1b) Then click on "File Transfer Settings"
1c) Make sure "Use multiple connections to transfer files" is enabled and set this to 10

2) Reduced interaction
If you are wasting your time answering questions about overwriting all the time and they are always the same answer you can go set the default so you don't have to watch your transfers.
2a) Go to Edit --> Settings
2b) Then click on "File Transfer Settings"
2c) There is a radio list at the bottom, select the option that best suits you, this would normally be "Overwrite if newer"
